3. Status of Compliance with the Requirements

The website steiff.com is partially compliant with the requirements of BITV 2.0.

The following areas already meet the provisions of BITV 2.0 and WCAG 2.1 and are regularly reviewed as part of our ongoing improvements:

  • General page content and product information, presented in a clearly structured format and accessible to screen readers.

  • Standard text content, implemented with sufficient readability, semantic HTML elements, and correct heading structure.

  • Images with maintained or appropriately marked decorative alt text, provided they do not serve a functional purpose.

  • Basic navigation and page structure, which can be easily perceived both visually and through assistive technologies.

  • Responsive design, ensuring that the website remains usable on various devices and screen sizes.

  • Interactive standard controls, which are properly marked up and operable via keyboard and screen reader.

  • Functional areas without dynamic content, such as many content pages and informational sections, which are fully accessible.

Non-compliant elements and exemptions are listed under point “4. Non-accessible Content” below.

4. Non-accessible Content

The contents listed below are currently not, or only partially, accessible. Remediation is planned and will be carried out as part of ongoing optimisation efforts.

Text Alternatives & Perceivability

Some graphical and visual content is currently not fully provided with text alternatives or is not accessible to screen readers.

  • Alt texts in some cases do not sufficiently describe the content of informative images or graphics.
  • For decorative images, the alt attribute is not always correctly set to empty.
  • Text content is embedded within images and therefore cannot be recognised as actual text.
  • Missing text alternatives and ARIA attributes in the shopping basket prevent correct identification by screen readers.
  • Certain icons (e.g. bin, edit) are not detectable by a screen reader.

Labelling & Identifiability of Controls

Some interactive controls are not sufficiently labelled or are not marked up semantically correctly.

  • Unclear or non-specific link texts for call-to-action elements.
  • Missing labels for input fields, checkboxes, and radio buttons.
  • Missing or incomplete labelling of input fields.
  • Labels on form pages are not correctly associated with their respective input fields.

Operability & Control of User Interface Elements

Some interactive elements currently do not meet all operability requirements.

  • Icons such as search, favourite, bin, or colour selection are smaller than the recommended minimum size of 24 × 24 px.
  • Page navigation on product listing pages behaves inconsistently.

Semantic Structure & Relationships

Some texts and graphical elements do not meet the required minimum contrast ratios.

  • Text and background in some places do not achieve a contrast ratio of 4.5 :1.

  • Buttons, links and visual indicators are below the minimum contrast of 3 :1.

  • On 200 % zoom some contents are cut off or become unreadable.

  • Adjustments to text spacing lead to layout shifts.

Contrast & Readability

Some text and graphical elements do not meet the required minimum contrast values.

  • Text and background in some areas do not achieve a contrast ratio of 4.5:1.
  • Buttons, links, and visual indicators fall below the minimum contrast ratio of 3:1.
  • When zoomed to 200%, certain content becomes truncated or illegible.
  • Adjustments to text spacing result in layout shifts.

Input Errors & Forms

Forms and error messages are in some cases not accessible.

  • Missing associations between labels and input fields.
  • Input fields without labels or without autocomplete.
  • Mandatory fields are indicated only by colour or a symbol, without textual identification.
  • Missing or unclear error messages when incorrect data is entered.
  • Overlapping content in select fields.

Keyboard Operability & Focus Management

Some content and controls are currently not fully operable via keyboard.

  • Flyouts (e.g. search, “My Steiff”, and “Basket”) cannot be accessed or closed using the keyboard.
  • Dropdowns cannot be closed via keyboard.
  • Slider arrows shift position when focused.
  • Content appears only on hover and is not accessible via keyboard.
  • Interactive elements are not consistently focusable.
